Steam distillation process
Steam Distillation Process
Step 1
Steam distilling involves suspending a basket of terpene rich plant material above a vessel of boiling water.
Step 2
The steam passes through the perforated basket and penetrates the plant material.
Step 3
As the terpene-entrained steam passes out of the top of the distiller it comes in contact with a cooled condenser which liquefies the water and oils.
Step 4
The lighter oils float on the surface of the water and are easily collected.
Step 5
Essential oils are separated and distilled again to isolate the desired terpenes from their respective essential oils.
